Employment Rights Act 2025: unfair dismissal protection after six months starts on 1 January 2027. See what it means for your business

HR consultancy in Milton Keynes for growing businessesYour business runs on people. Are yours running it with you?

We are not your typical HR consultancy; we are something a bit different. Keyne HR focuses on the people behind all the processes and policies. When every person in your business understands why their role matters and how it connects to where you are going, everything else changes. Performance improves, people stay and, best of all, the work actually gets done to a high standard.

Here is what most business owners say

Their team is fine, mostly.

People do not disengage because they are difficult. They disengage because nobody has shown them why their work matters.

But when they take a true moment of honest reflection, the truth often stares them right in the face. The person who does just enough, the manager who avoids that difficult conversation, the person who has been there for years and still does not seem to understand what the business is actually trying to do.

These are not simply performance problems that can be fixed with a policy. These are people problems, and the reason they exist is simpler than most realise.

People do not disengage because they are difficult (well, the majority of the time). They disengage because they have never been helped to see why their work matters, where it fits in the bigger picture, and what it would look like if they gave it everything.

That is the gap Keyne HR works in. Not simply the paperwork side of HR (though we cover that too). We focus more on the human side: the part that determines whether your business runs because of your people or in spite of them.

What working with Keyne HR actually means

01

A person who knows your business

Not a call centre or a person who doesn't really care. We take the time to understand your history, your team, your ambitions and the problems you have been putting off dealing with. That context always matters.

02

Honesty, not just reassurance

If there is a conversation you need to have with a member of staff, we will help you have it. If a process you have been using is putting you at risk, we will say so and help you through it. You need someone who will help you get it right.

03

Real people solutions

Not HR and compliance documents that sit in a folder and never get used. Our work starts with your people and works backwards to the policies. We suppose you could say we are keen about your people (pun intended).

04

Calm in the difficult moments

When something goes wrong, you will not be figuring it out alone at 11pm. You will have someone in your corner who has been there before, who knows the law, and who will advise you exactly what to do next.

The biggest change to employment law in a generation

The Act applies to every employer, whatever your size. Some changes are already in force and the most significant ones for small businesses arrive over the next few months.

  • In force now: statutory sick pay from day one, day one paternity and parental leave, and a six month time limit for tribunal claims.
  • 30 October 2026: a duty to take all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment, including by third parties.
  • 1 January 2027: unfair dismissal protection after six months' service instead of two years, with no cap on compensation.

Questions we hear often

Frequently asked questions

Do you only work with businesses in Milton Keynes?

We are based in Milton Keynes and work with SMEs across Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, including Bedford, Northampton, Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard. Much of our support is delivered by phone and video, so we can also help businesses further afield.

How much does an HR consultant cost for a small business?

It depends on the number of employees and the level of support you need. We offer fixed monthly retainers so there are no surprise bills, one off HR Fundamentals packages, and ad hoc support at an agreed hourly or day rate. Book a free call and we will recommend the right option with no obligation.

What does the Employment Rights Act 2025 mean for small businesses?

The Act applies to employers of every size. Statutory sick pay from day one, day one paternity and parental leave and a six month tribunal time limit are already in force. A new duty to take all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment starts on 30 October 2026, and from 1 January 2027 employees gain unfair dismissal protection after six months rather than two years. Read our full guide.

Do I need a retainer or can I get help with a one off issue?

Both are available. Our ad hoc service covers a specific issue such as a disciplinary, grievance or redundancy with no ongoing commitment. If you find you need regular support, a retainer usually works out more cost effective.
